Busy Boxes are brilliant. The idea is to make (ahead of time) five boxes of quiet activities or crafts that are ready to pop in front of your toddler or preschooler when you both need a time-out – for us that’s after daycare while I’m making dinner.

They are cheap and easy to make, you can fill them with any activity you think your little one might enjoy, and for the most part they don’t require adult supervision. Here are some of our favourites:
