My name is Kristen. I’m a freelance writer and blogger from Toronto, living in Kelowna, British Columbia. This is a whimsical picture of me running away from the ocean, which is a habit of mine, as I don’t tend to like being in the ocean.
I’m also a wife, doggy mom, and human mom to two little girls. I like plaid.
About Running With Safety Scissors
I started this blog in 2013 as a writing outlet while on maternity leave from my job as a newspaper editor. I’d worked as a journalist for 10 years, and before that I was an intrepid 20-something backpacker. And before that a university student. Suffice it to say, I suddenly didn’t know what to do with myself.
Mat leave was isolating and overwhelming. Action-packed and boring all at once. I missed writing and connecting with people, and I suddenly had so much I wanted to talk about.
So I started blogging: about how I couldn’t get my kid to eat my painstakingly-made baby food; about how shitty it was to have an emergency c-section; how I was paranoid my kid could see (and antagonize) ghosts.
Suddenly people started sharing my posts, and asking me to write more. I had found a community of people who were also fumbling through parenthood with humour, sarcasm and lots of coffee. And so Running With Safety Scissors was born.
What Makes This Blog Different
This is a blog for adults who also just happen to be parents (like me!).
Which means if I’ve finally found the perfect sippy cup, I’m going to tell you about. Or if I’ve discovered the best play dough recipe, or had a parenting epiphany, or need to rant about the gong show that is taking a stroller on the streetcar, I’ll write about it here.
And if I have written a news story about allergies and kids, with interviews from experts who have provided me with science-backed research, I’m going to publish it here, too.
I try to tackle all of it with balance, compassion and humour. That’s what I love about blogging and journalism, and that’s what I love about Running With Safety Scissors.
